I am so excited to welcome my dear friend Sam Cheever to talk about her release Tall, Dark & Apocalyptic. Take it away, Sam!
I recently asked a group of women what traits they love most about their favorite alpha males. They mentioned things like strength, dominance, possessiveness, and the ability and willingness to protect others. The question was based on fictional alpha males, but obviously pertains to real life alphas as well. Today’s men are expected to fight with words rather than fists. They’re told they should stand behind their women (literally as well as figuratively), and these women (unlike men) can be as aggressive and dominating as they’d like. A strong man is considered a Neanderthal, with more brawn than brains. A ruthless or aggressive man is considered dangerous and must be subjugated or stopped entirely.  However, fortunately for us alpha lovers, there are still a few places where it’s okay to act like a man. Certain male-dominated professions not only encourage alpha-like qualities, but they are generally respected because of them.

Firefighters, cops, and soldiers come to mind.

So what is it about the men of  these heroic professions that draws women? Well, for one thing, they’re all big on the protective instincts. In fact these heroes often sacrifice their own safety to protect others. There are no weaklings in the protective services. They require strength of mind as well as body, bringing to mind visions of broad shoulders, taut six packs and firm, nicely rounded pecs. These men embody the alpha spirit in almost every way. So, is it any wonder the men of the protective services dominate in today’s romantic fiction?

I love a good fictional as well as real life alpha male, which is why I wrote Tall, Dark & Apocalyptic. And I can’t wait to share the wonderful Audie Kord with you on March 8th! In the meantime, here’s a taste:

A grand passion in an apocalyptic world. A love beyond reason and without boundaries.

He’s a warrior, a bounty hunter in a world turned upside down. She’s a target, a creature of dark magic. His job is simple. Kill the target. Her goal is more complex. She must stay alive until she finds and destroys the source of death magic staining the twenty worlds. But the passion burning within them may be their undoing. It’s going to take an apocalyptic will to overcome the distraction their bodies are creating…and not lose themselves in the process.

The woman was mad. Audie forced himself to hold her gaze, though his gut churned and his fists were clenched so hard his knuckles hurt. “You’ll just stand there and let me kill you?” His voice was like gravel on glass and he had to force the words past a clenched jaw.

She didn’t look happy about it but she nodded.

“Why would you do that?” Even to Audie his tone sounded choked, unhappy.

Her delicate chin lifted and anger flashed through her exquisite gaze. “I’d have thought you of all people would understand. You said yourself I’m a monster. If I’m to be true to my goal of clearing away Edwige’s spawn, that would include me, wouldn’t it?”

Her rationale was perfect, her calm in discussing her own death chilling. Audie couldn’t deny his earlier, hateful words. But in that moment he’d have cut off a hand to be able to. He looked down, no longer able to hold her gaze.

“Will you help me?” The words were spoken so softly Audie barely heard them. But their meaning made them thrum against his ears. If he agreed to help her he’d be concurring with all of it.

He wasn’t sure he could deliver on the second part of her deal. But he nodded, knowing that if he didn’t do it she’d find another hunter who would be all too willing to oblige. Audie had a sudden thought that lightened the load on his heart. “I’ll help you destroy Edwige but only if you’ll aid me in exterminating the last of her pets.”

It would only delay the inevitable but if he tarried—

Surprise flashed through her expression, followed quickly by suspicion. Lifting a feathery, red eyebrow she asked, “You don’t think you can kill them on your own?”

“It will go more quickly if you help.” He hoped the lie didn’t sound as weak to her as it did to him.
